Emmys 2024: Surprises, Snubs and Full List of Major Nominees
The 2024 Emmy nominations are in, and it's a mixed bag of likely nominees, some surprises, and yes, a few snubs. Between The Bear, Abbott Elementary, The Crown, Hacks, Shōgun, and Only Murders in the Building, it's fair to assume your favorite show is part of the mix. Let's break it down.
The 76th annual Emmy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, September 15. The full list of the major nominees is below. And, of course, we'll be covering the entire Emmys season on the Parting Shot Podcast with H. Alan Scott.
Who's In the Lead?
The Bear set a record for a comedy series in a single year. The FX comedy series picked up 23 nominations, the most for a comedy in a year. (The record was previously held by 30 Rock, which received 22 nominations in 2009.)
On the drama side, the FX series Shōgun lead with 25 nominations.
What Were the Surprises?
There were a few surprises this year, which is always fun. In the comedy categories, FX's Reservation Dogs surprised everyone by nabbing nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. The show has been a critics darling for years but had always had little traction at the Emmys. Another surprise in the comedy category happened in the Outstanding Lead Actress category, Maya Rudolph for Loot and Kristen Wiig for Palm Royale, both Apple+ originals. While both very funny, they weren't on many lists for expected nominees.
In the drama categories, Idris Elba surprised everyone and picked up a nomination for Apple+'s Hijack.
And in the limited series or movie categories, Netflix's Ripley and FX's Feud: Capote vs. the Swans did better than expected, with Naomi Watts picking up an Outstanding Lead Actress nomination for Feud.
But it should come as no surprise that Newsweek featured several chats on the Parting Shot Podcast with many nominees this year, including Jodie Foster, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gary Oldman, Jean Smart, Olivia Colman, and Hannah Einbinder. So, make sure you're subscribed to hear future conversations with even more nominees.
Who Got Snubbed?
We love a snub, and this year there were a few. The biggest is the lack of love for Showtime's The Curse. The Nathan Fielder and Emma Stone series was weird, but everyone expected it to at least pick up a nomination for Stone. (I mean, she's a two-time Oscar winner.) But alas, nothing.
Another snub was the lack of attention for the reboot of Frasier. While the Paramount+ series isn't incredible, it does feature Kelsey Grammer, an Emmys darling. So, him not getting a nomination just feels wrong.
In the limited series or movie categories, the biggest snub was Kate Winslet for HBO Max's The Regime. The show wasn't reviewed well, but her performance was. Another snub in this category was the lack of love for Apple TV+'s Masters of the Air. It was a huge production, but it came up dry on Emmys nomination morning.
