While many were observing the Easter holiday outside far away from movie theaters this weekend, millions of other people were experiencing something a bit more dark-sided inside movie theaters. That's because Ryan Coogler's vampire supernatural thriller Sinners unexpectedly dominated the box office, taking in $45.6 million domestically, knocking the expected box office champ, Minecraft, out of the top slot.
Estimates on Friday made it seem like Minecraft would continue to claim the top slot for the third week in a row, but an increase in walk up ticket sales pushed Sinners over the edge. For an R-rated film over Easter weekend, this is rare and a big win for Coogler, the film's star, Michael B. Jordan, and Warner Bros. Just to double down on why Sinners success is so surprising, it's an original story, not based on existing intellectual property like Minecraft (a game), and it's a period film.
Set in the Mississippi Delta in 1932, Sinners tells the story of twin brothers (both played by Michael B. Jordan), who return to their hometown only to discover it's been taken over by an evil force.
What I find particularly exciting about Sinners' box office success is that it shows how hungry we are for original stories. Hopefully this is a sign for Hollywood to keep making films like this. (Because I'm craving them).
That's it for me today. I'll see you Wednesday. Keep scrolling for more entertainment news.
