Walz-ing Onto SNL: Who Should Play Harris' VP Pick?

After Vice President Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her VP pick, the internet went wild with a very important question: Who will play him on Saturday Night Live? And this is a topic that I very much would like to discuss.

For many, all eyes turned to another Minnesotan, former U.S. Senator and comedian Al Franken. And I get why people would think he'd be a good choice, he famously used to work on SNL and clearly gets the Minnesota vibe, but it just doesn't feel right for me. Some say Parks and Recreation actor Jim O'Heir would be a great choice because he looks surprisingly similar to Walz, or even comic Jim Gaffigan. The thing is, I think the person who plays Walz needs to be more than just someone who looks like Walz, they need to understand the timing of a Walz zinger, and also mesh well with Maya Rudolph's Kamala Harris.

For me, there's only one person who can do this: Steve Martin. The timing is perfect in terms of promotion, the new season of Martin's Only Murders in the Building is roughly the same time as the historic 50th season of SNL launches, so he'll already be out making the promotion rounds. And frankly, not to mention selfishly, I want to see Maya Rudolph and Steve Martin in a sketch together. (How iconic would that be?!) And I'm not alone in wanting this, a ton of people, including celebrities like Rosie O'Donnell, were posting images of Rudolph and Martin together asking SNL to make this happen.

Speaking of celebs, they are turning things out for Harris. Just the other day there was a Comics for Harris Zoom where a bunch of comics got together to do bits in support of Harris while roasting former President Donald Trump and his running mate, U.S. Senator J.D. Vance. (Can we talk for a minute about the resurgence of these Zooms? From White Ladies for Harris to Elders for Harris Zoom, it's kind of feeling like pandemic days, and I'm not sure how to feel about it.) Anyway, Ben Stiller had some cringe words during his bit. "You know, I'm Jewish and Irish," Still said on the Zoom. "I wish I was Black. Every White Jewish guy wishes he was Black. You know, get out there and vote and donate and take advantage." As a fellow white Jewish person, I'm not sure he necessarily speaks for us on this one. I'm gonna suggest he hire a writer to maybe, I dunno, come up with better material? (I'm not available, but I know people.)

Anyway, these celebrities are pumped about Harris picking Walz. Click the link below to see what they're saying. And I'll be back on Friday. Have a great one.

The couple are no strangers to foreign tours. As working members of the royal family after their marriage in 2018, they traveled to the South Pacific, Morocco, Ireland, and South Africa at the request of the U.K. government, representing Queen Elizabeth II.

After their split from the monarchy in 2020, the couple has taken their private philanthropic work around the world too, attending events across the U.S., the U.K., Germany, the Netherlands and Canada.
