There's a funny moment from The Wendy Williams Show where she's hosting a Halloween episode and sees someone in the audience wearing a scary mask. She goes, "What was that?" Well, that's how I feel after watching the finale of The White Lotus.
Was it good? I'm not sure. Did I love it? No, but I didn't hate it. Like so much of The White Lotus, I'm left unsure of what to think about it, and that's kind of what makes the HBO show brilliant, you know? Mike White, the creator and director of the series, knows how to get people talking, and well, there's a lot to talk about.
While the deaths weren't totally a surprise–I didn't want Aimee Lou Wood's Chelsea to die, but I was fine with Walton Goggins' Rick dying–I was surprised by a few things that didn't happen. How did Jon Gries' Greg survive? (We need justice for Jennifer Coolidge's Tanya!) And the end result for the Ratliff family was a bit... meh. All I needed was Parker Posey to find out she's poor now, is that too much to ask for?
But there's one moment that made the finale perfect, and that was a monologue from Carrie Coon. It was a moment when her character was coming to terms with her two friends, played by Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan, after a fairly tumultuous trip. Coon somehow weaves in loneliness, sadness, a grappling with the passage of time, how friendships evolve as we age, but also so much joy and acceptance, all of this into one monologue. That monologue will win her an Emmy, mark my words.
What did you think about the finale? Let me know, I'm @HAlanScott on everything.
