Will Rudolph Return as 'America's Cool Aunt' on SNL?
News of President Joe Biden dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris sent everyone into overdrive. This moment is certainly historic. Not only has a sitting first-term president not sought reelection in nearly 50 years, but this is also the first time a Black woman and South Asian American is the presumptive nominee for a major political party. And when the news dropped, everyone was talking about the historic nature of this moment, rightfully so. Everyone except me. Sure, this is historic, but I just kept thinking about one thing: Maya Rudolph is going to be on Saturday Night Live a lot this year.
She famously and hilariously portrayed Harris on SNL since Harris first announced her 2020 presidential campaign. Along the way, she picked up an Emmy for her work. What makes Rudolph's Harris so perfect is that she's able to find the balance between poking fun at her sometimes-laughable qualities–her awkwardness at events, her laugh, her need to be "cool"–while also recognizing the historic nature of her position. She plays Harris like an uncomfortable boss lady, or rather, that fun aunt. In fact, in one sketch, she described herself as "America's cool aunt. A fun aunt. I call that a 'Funt.'"
And the timing of Harris as the presumptive nominee could not be more perfect because it aligns beautifully with the premiere of the historic season 50 of Saturday Night Live. Come September, when we're in the height of the presidential campaign, SNL will premiere in what has been rumored to be a huge season, with past players coming back, primetime specials, and more. The big question is, will Alec Baldwin return as Donald Trump? Can you just imagine a debate sketch between Baldwin and Trump and Rudolph as Harris? That is something I want to see. In fact, that is something I need to see.
And guess what? I'm not alone in wanting this. When the news dropped, I posted this to Instagram, because I think in memes. But then elsewhere on social media, everyone seemed to be talking about Rudolph as Harris. "Hope Maya Rudolph has cleared her schedule," one user posted to X, formerly Twitter.
