Tom Cruise Steals the Show, Celine Steals the Mic & LA Steals the Spotlight
The Olympics officially passed the torch from Paris to Los Angeles ahead of the 2028 games, and in typical LA style, the ceremony for it was extra. As the 2024 Paris Games wrapped up—with the United States and China leading the most gold medals won with 40—LA brought out all the stops and the stars.
Right after H.E.R. rocked the national anthem, Tom Cruise made a jaw-dropping entrance from the top of the Stade de France stadium. Then he jumped, because when you're Tom Cruise, you do that sort of thing. When he safely landed, he walked through the crowd, taking the Olympic flag from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. But Tom wasn't done. He hopped on his motorcycle, cruising through the streets of Paris with the flag in hand. The grand finale? A pre-recorded video showing him in Los Angeles adorning the Hollywood sign with Olympic rings.
Let's be real, it was cheesy. But also, fun. Which is so LA.
After that, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Billie Eilish performed. It was a good end to a great Olympics and definitely got everyone excited for the games in 2028. (That said, as a resident of Los Angeles, despite Mayor Bass saying the 2028 games will be "car free," I'm lowkey already dreading the traffic because let's be real, it's LA!.)
Here's what else is going on in the world of pop culture...
Celine Dion's heart will not go on for Donald Trump. After the Trump campaign played a clip of Dion singing "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic, Dion's management issued a statement. "In no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use. ...And really, THAT song?" I think she said what everyone was thinking with that last line. Why THAT song?!
Disney's D23 announced a ton of new things coming to the company and the parks, but it was their Disney Legends ceremony that got the internet talking. Jamie Lee Curtis got the crowd singing during her speech and Miley Cyrus was visibly emotional during her speech, with the crowd giving the singer a standing ovation. It was a great weekend for Disney.
That's it for me today. I'll be back on Wednesday with more. Keep scrolling for more entertainment news.
