Creative Arts Emmys: 'Shōgun' and 'The Bear' dominate, RuPaul's Crown Slips
While the Primetime Emmy Awards won't be handed out until this Sunday, a ton of Emmys were handed out over this last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys, which honors mostly behind-the-scenes talent. And it's who won there that could give us an insight into who will be the big winner come Sunday night. Let's get into it.
Shōgun, the epic FX drama series, broke a record with its 14 wins, making it the most Emmys won by a TV series in a single year. That's a big deal considering they still have a chance to win a ton more Emmys next Sunday. Other big winners over the weekend include The Bear, Saturday Night Live and Only Murders in the Building. Expect these shows to dominate this Sunday.
Speaking of The Bear, last year I chatted with Jamie Lee Curtis after her episode aired. I told her she was going to win an Emmy for her performance and guess what? She won an Emmy for her performance, thank you very much. Her Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series win is her first Emmy.
A big shocker from the night was RuPaul's 8-year winning streak coming to an end after the drag queen legend lost Outstanding Host of a Reality Competition Series to Alan Cumming for The Traitors. In fact, RuPaul's Drag Race went home empty handed over the weekend. Could The Traitors beat RuPaul's Drag Race for Outstanding Competition Reality Series? It looks likely.
But there were other big moments from the two-night ceremony. Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul achieved EGOT status with their win for Only Murders in the Building. Angela Bassett won her first Emmy (after nine nominations) for narrating the National Geographic docuseries Queens. And Sandra Oh and Awkwafina won their first Emmys for producing the very funny TV movie Quiz Lady.
The Primetime Emmy Awards will air Sunday, September 15th on ABC and guess what? I'll be covering all of it, so stick with Newsweek and follow me on social media to keep up with the latest. (Because the memes will be posted.)
