Emmys: 'Shōgun' Dominates as Hacks' Upsets 'The Bear'

If you're asking yourself, 'Wait, didn't the Emmys just happen?' Yes, yes, they did. Because of the various strikes that hit Hollywood earlier this year, the 75th Emmy Awards were delayed, with the statues being handed out in January. But hey, when has Hollywood ever missed an opportunity to hand out some gold to mostly well-dressed celebrities? So let's break down all the winners and losers from the 76th Emmy Awards.

The biggest shock of the night was The Bear losing Outstanding Comedy Series to Hacks. While Hacks is an incredible show and I'm so, so glad it won, nobody expected it to win. The Bear was the favorite and won in almost every other category. Perhaps the conversation around whether The Bear qualifies as a comedy impacted how voters voted for the top prize? Regardless, it was the shock of the night, and everyone is still talking about.

Beyond that, Shōgun was the big winner last night, picking up 18 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. The FX series broke records this year, picking up more awards than any other series in a single year and making Anna Sawai the first Asian woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. It's also the first non-English show to win Outstanding Drama Series.

Other shows who had a great night included Netflix's Baby Reindeer, which won six awards, and The Traitors, who somehow dethroned RuPaul's Drag Race as the Outstanding Reality Competition Series winner.

But can we talk about fashion? For me, the men who turned it out included Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer from Fellow Travelers and Chris Prefetti and Tyler James Williams from Abbott Elementary. Honorable mention to Baby Reindeer's Richard Gadd and The Traitors' Alan Cumming for wearing kilts. (Because kilts make everything more fun, right?!)

The prize for the women who turned it out goes to a trio of funny ladies, Quinta Brunson, Mindy Kaling and Kristen Wiig. They were just... WOW! Also, Selena Gomez took the tile of her show Only Murders in the Building to heart because she killed it on the red carpet. You can see all the looks and who I think was the worst dressed last night here.

Wildest Moments in Emmys History

By Billie Schwab Dunn

The 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards is hitting our screens on September 15 and ahead of the occasion, Newsweek has rounded up some of the wildest moments in the award show's history.

This comes just eight months after the previous ceremony on January 15, as the 2023 ceremony was delayed due to the writers' and actors' strikes that took place that year. The show will be hosted by father-son duo, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who previously co-created the hit sitcom Schitt's Creek.
