Emmy Predictions: 'Shōgun' and 'The Bear' Will Steal the Show
Shōgun, The Bear, and Big Reindeer all go into Emmys this Sunday with a big opportunity to take home a ton of gold. Who will win? Who will lose? And can we expect any surprises from the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards when it airs on ABC? Let's get into it.
In the drama category, Shōgun is expected to dominate most categories. In fact, it's already dominated, picking up 14 statues at the Creative Arts Emmys, winning the most Emmys for a show ever. The only other show with an opportunity is The Crown, which is likely to pick up statues for Best Supporting Actress for Elizabeth Debicki for her performance as Princess Diana and maybe for Best Writing, only because the series ended this year and it's been a longtime Emmys darling.
In the comedy category, The Bear is expected to win everything. The "comedy" (because let's be real, is it even a comedy?) already picked up a ton of awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, and there's just nothing standing in the way of it picking up more on Sunday night. There are only two categories where the series will likely lose, and that's for the ladies of Hacks. Jean Smart will almost certainly win Best Actress for Hacks (this would be her third win a row for the series) and Hannah Einbinder will likely finally win her first Emmy for her work on the series. (She deserves it for the twist of the last episode alone.)
In the Limited Series category, while I had hoped Fellow Travelers had more of a chance, it feels like Baby Reindeer is going to dominate. And rightfully so, because the series was a massive success.
Need more? I'm breaking down all things Emmys on the latest episode of the Parting Shot podcast, so go give that a listen. (Also, not for nothing, you can listen to past episodes with some of the nominees this Sunday, including Matt Bomer, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Hannah Einbinder, among others, because yes, I get all the good guests.)
Here's what else is poppin' in the world of pop culture...
Lil Wayne is devastated he wasn't selected as the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show performer. Many had expected the New Orleans native to be at least one of the performers, given the game's location this year. Instead, Kendrick Lamar was selected. That said, Lamar could still ask Lil Wayne to make an appearance. Here's my thing, just because you're from the city doesn't mean you'll get to perform. Also, let's be real, Kendrick Lamar had a bigger year. (Just sayin'!)
Justin Timberlake pleaded guilty to a lesser non-criminal charge in his New York drunk driving case. He was sentenced to community service. Personally, I can't imagine doing community service next to Justin Timberlake. I'd probably ask about Britney Spears while spooning soup into a plastic bowl.
The Democratic National Committee is capitalizing on Taylor Swift's endorsement of Kamala Harris by referencing her songs on digital billboards across New York City, using lines like "We're In Our Kamala Era!" and "A New Way Forward... Ready for It?" Listen, her song titles as made for puns, as I showed in this video. I'm really just waiting for the Harris campaign to somehow work into an ad, "... look what you made me do." That's all I want.
That's it for me today! I'll be back Monday reacting to all the winners (and the looks) at the Emmys this Sunday. Follow me at @HAlanScott for live reactions. Have a great weekend!
