Did Harris' Appearance on 'SNL' Break the Rules?
Vice President Kamala Harris' surprise appearance on SNL this weekend was both hilarious and potentially a violation of an FCC Equal Time rule for candidates.
Brendan Carr, an FCC regulator nominated by former President Donald Trump and re-nominated by President Joe Biden, wrote on X that Harris' appearance was "a clear and blatant effort to evade the FCC's Equal Time rule." The rule basically states that networks need to offer equal airtime for candidates (news coverage is excluded from this rule).
While the FCC told Entertainment Weekly in a statement that they had not "received a complaint from any interested parties," NBC still aired two 90 second Trump ads during Sunday's NASCAR race and NFL game, which would equate to more airtime than Harris' SNL appearance.
All that said, it was funny, and I'm glad they snuck in a jab at Harris' laugh, which she was a good sport about.
