Week in Review: Luigi Mangione Goes Viral (For All the Wrong Reasons)

If there's one story this week that dominated every area of the news, it was the arrest of Luigi Mangione, the alleged assassin of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. When photos of Mangione hit social media, users across platforms went into a tizzy. Not only did his alleged crimes become a viral story, Mangione himself (or the perception of him) as a cultural figure went viral. From some users hailing him as a modern-day Robin Hood to others lusting over his chiseled looks, we're clearly experiencing something as a society that is both fascinating and mildly disturbing. Which is why that's the story we're starting off with for this week's week-in-review.

Listen or watch Newsweek's Parting Shot podcast for the full reaction to the news of the week. Here's a preview of what you need to know...

Reality TV had a lot to offer this week. I chatted with Andy and Genevieve from Survivor about where they think their games went wrong and what it's like to get so close to the finale. (The final episode of season 47 of Survivor airs next Wednesday, and I'll be chatting with the winner the following day on the podcast). Also, Kandy Muse of RuPaul's Drag Race fame chatted with me about their exit from House of Villains.

On the book front, check out Daniel Aleman's I Might Be in Trouble. Aleman spoke with Newsweek about making the transition from young adult novels to adult fiction and how the inspiration for I Might Be in Trouble came from close to home.

And some movies to check out this weekend include the animated Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim and Angelina Jolie in Netflix's Maria, where the Oscar-winner plays Opera singer Maria Callas. (She will be nominated for the Oscar for this performance.)

OK, that's it for me today. Keep scrolling for more entertainment news. I'll see you on Monday!

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie's 'Encore' Brings Back the Joy of 'Simple Life'

By H. Alan Scott

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are ready to bring a little "sanasa" to the world with Peacock's Paris & Nicole: The Encore, their first project together since their reality show The Simple Life ended in 2007. What's "sanasa"? It's a song and phrase the longtime friends created as kids and popularized on Simple Life. Now they're bringing it back and turning it into an opera on Encore. "I know this is just going to make people laugh, have fun, be nostalgic, and then just celebrate our friendship and our amazing song," Hilton says.

While Richie acknowledges, "you can't do Simple Life again," she says now "felt like the right time...we really loved doing that show." In addition to the opera, the famous pair also revisit some old jobs in Arkansas, like their time at Sonic. (And in a full-circle moment, the pair now have drinks named after them at the fast-food chain.) "I think that there is a part of our friendship that the show ended up showing that people connect to," Richie says. As for this new special, Hilton is just glad to do something positive for their fans. "It's been such a crazy past couple years, and I just feel like the world needs more joy."
