'Emilia Pérez' Dominated the Golden Globes...And People Aren't Happy

Emilia Pérez swept the Golden Globes last Sunday, picking up four awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana. Usually that would mean it's a fan favorite and likely a big nominations contender come Oscar season. But if you looked at social media, you'd see that Emilia Pérez is anything but a fan favorite.

People on social media are sounding off at their confusion over why people (award voters) think Emilia Pérez is good. There's criticism over Selena Gomez's Spanish, there's reactions to the film's alleged cultural appropriation, and then there's the response to the music, which, to me, is the root of the criticism of Emilia Pérez.

Hollywood musicals aren't the norm these days. So, the fact that we have two musicals in the mix for Best Picture, Emilia Pérez and Wicked, it's bound to inspire some comparisons and yes, some reactions from diehard fans. The problem is, there are more diehard fans of Wicked than there are of Emilia Pérez, which is why it seems like the backlash to Emilia Pérez is so strong.

Personally, I love the drama. Did I love Emilia Pérez? No. Did I love Wicked? No. Do I love seeing the fans fight it out online? Yes. Because the world is a mess right now–here in Los Angeles, it's quite literally on fire–so excuse me if I'm delighting in the absurdity over people being upset over a movie musical. It's the little things, you know?

That's it for me today. Keep scrolling for more entertainment news!
