Gascón Might Lose, But Who Will Win?

If you've been following the race for the Academy Award, you know there's a lot of drama surrounding Emilia Pérez's Karla Sofía Gascón and her past racist and xenophobic comments on social media. These resurfaced posts have overshadowed her historic nomination for Best Actress–she is the first openly transgender person nominated for an acting Oscar–and likely squandered Emilia Pérez's chances of winning any of its 13 nominations. So, with that said, who and what films are poised to benefit from this?

The most obvious person is Demi Moore, who is now all but guaranteed to win the Best Actress Oscar for The Substance. And in the Best Supporting Actress category, Emilia Pérez's Zoe Saldana was the frontrunner, but now the tides are shifting, and all eyes are turning to Ariana Grande for her performance in Wicked. Out of all the other nominees in this category, Grande stands out because of her unique path to the role and the surprise reactions fans had to her impressive performance next to a performer like Cynthia Erivo, who rightly often steals the spotlight with that voice. (Erivo is also nominated for Best Actress.)

But Grande isn't the only major potential win for Wicked. Early in the awards season, it looked like a race between Emilia Pérez and The Brutalist for Best Picture, but because of the drama around Emilia Pérez and the recent controversy around The Brutalist's use of AI, the Best Picture race is suddenly open. Out of the ten nominees, only one of them is both a critical success and a fan favorite, and that's Wicked.

A win for Wicked would not only be a win for millions of fans that made Wicked a success at the box office, but it would also likely bring in more viewers to the Oscar telecast, something the Academy desperately needs after years of low ratings. (Not to mention it would be a win for The Wizard of Oz, who lost the Best Picture Oscar in 1939 to Gone with the Wind.)

Who do you think will win? Let me know, I'm @HAlanScott on everything. That's it for me today. Keep scrolling for more entertainment news. I'll see you Friday.
