Why is TLC's 'The Baldwins' a Thing?

You know those parents who talk too much about their kids? Well, what if you add to that two parents who also happen to be celebrities known for being... complicated? That's what you get when you tune into Alec and Hilaria Baldwin on TLC's The Baldwins. (And for the record, I'm not encouraging you to watch because I care about your mental well-being.)

The Baldwins debuted this week and showed the very hectic life of the family of nine (seven kids and two attention-seeking celebrity parents). After watching the first episode it's clear that the show, intended as a family reality series with a focus on their life with their kids, actually is just the opposite. That's because it only exists to clear the names of Alec and Hilaria Baldwin after recent scandals, yet even with that it somehow only makes them look more out-of-touch.

With the kids largely there as accessories, the series follows Alec during his legal drama over the tragic shooting on the set of the film Rust (the involuntary manslaughter case against Alec was dropped in July 2024.) It also addresses the cultural appropriation charges against Hilaria, whose birth name is Hillary. She's been accused of falsifying her Spanish accent and details about her past (just do one YouTube search and you'll see what I'm talking about).

But even beyond the scandals, I don't know why we need The Baldwins, especially if the real endgame is to repair their public image, because it's seemingly doing the opposite. Unlike the Kardashians, whose vanity we accept because they're transparent about it, the Baldwins as reality stars don't work because they're performative with their "reality" and incapable of being the one thing we want in reality stars: genuine.

That's it for me today. I'll see you Friday with more. (We're getting ready for the Oscars!! I'll be dropping my predictions then.) But keep scrolling for more!

Rapper Young MC Has a New Collaborator—and She's All Digital

By Vic Verbalaitis

Marvin Young, better known as the rapper Young MC, burst into the mainstream from his college dorm room with the 1989 megahit "Bust A Move." While his classmates studied at the library, he was onstage at the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards, taking home the first televised Grammy for Best Rap Performance at the age of 22. Today, the 57-year-old rapper is reentering the fold with a modern sound—and he's brought a new friend with him.

Since last June, Young has released three new singles: "Loose," "Fun Part" and December's "Kinetic"—all under his Disco Theory label. "Fun Part" debuted at No. 38 on Billboard's Rhythmic Airplay chart, bringing Young MC back to the charts for the first time since 2002's "Heatseeker."
