There's A Reason Why 'Joker: Folie à Deux' Is a Flop
Listen, bad movies come out all the time. Especially sequels. (How could they ever be as good as the original?) But rarely does a sequel come along that is so highly anticipated, with the same creative time as the original, fail so miserably on all fronts: critically, creatively and at the box office. But that's exactly what's happening with Joker: Folie à Deux. Let's talk about what's going on.
I knew things were going to be bad when my boyfriend got sick 20 minutes into the movie. It wasn't something he ate. It was something he saw. (I don't need to go into detail about this, but trust, it was icky.) As the film progressed, I kept thinking, 'What went wrong? Am I missing something? Am I not arty enough to get this?' I also kept thinking what the film would be like if it weren't a Joker-themed movie. Like if it were just a movie about two people falling in love in a psychiatric hospital. Would that make it better? No, it would still be boring. Would it be different if it weren't a musical? Nope, still boring.
I will say there is one part of it that isn't boring: Lady Gaga. Whenever she's on screen, you can't take your eyes off of her. I made an Instagram video poking fun at this, but I think the film would have been a lot better if it featured more Gaga. She gave this rather dull story life whenever she was on screen, which wasn't nearly enough.
It's hard to tell what went wrong, but I feel like it all lies with director Todd Phillips. Regardless, Joker: Folie à Deux joins an exclusive club of highly anticipated sequels that failed miserably. Remember Staying Alive, the sequel to Saturday Night Fever? Didn't think so. Remember how many people made fun of The Godfather III? Even though I know it's bad, I still watch Sex and the City 2 way too often. Exorcist II: The Heretic is probably up there with Joker as one of the most disappointing sequels after the massive success of the original. But for me, the worst sequel of all time is Speed 2. It was so bad, even Keanu Reeves was like, nahhhh, I'm good. Y'all have fun.
That's it for me today. Keep scrolling for more entertainment. I'll see you Wednesday.
