Who Will Dominate the Oscars?

We just got a major glimpse of what films will likely dominate at this year's Oscars, and things are looking bright for two very different musicals: Wicked and Emilia Pérez.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlist of eligible films members can vote for in certain categories. The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards will be announced January 17.

Out of all the categories, Wicked and Emilia Pérez made the most appearances, a good sign they'll be leaders in nominations this year. Emilia Pérez is the most interesting film in the mix because it has the potential of picking up multiple nominations in two categories: Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress (for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana). Meanwhile Wicked will certainly pick up a ton of nominations, especially in technical categories, but with less of an opportunity for double nominations.

The other bonus for Emilia Pérez is that it can be nominated in the Best International Feature category. In fact, this category is one of the most competitive in years, with Brazil's I'm Still Here considered the frontrunner. But films like Ireland's Kneecap and Germany's The Seed of the Sacred Fig are also likely nominees.

Of course, stick with me and Newsweek for all your award's coverage. That's it for me today. Keep scrolling for more entertainment news.
